Why Symbolica?
Ambitious calculations deserve better tools.
Symbolica brings high-performance symbolic computation into everyday programming. It combines exact mathematics with fast numerical evaluation, helping researchers and developers build calculations that remain practical as their problems grow.
Built from demanding research
I developed computer algebra software for research at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, working with expressions containing millions of terms and calculations that could take a terabyte of memory.
Those problems demanded exceptional performance. They also exposed how difficult specialized software could be to use and maintain. I built Symbolica to bring that experience to a modern, approachable computer algebra engine, ready for challenges far beyond particle physics.
Easy to build on
Symbolica combines a high-performance engine with a typed Python interface. Explicit types, discoverable methods, and worked examples help you turn an idea into a working calculation—with editor completion and AI coding assistants along the way.
Start with an experiment in a notebook, then integrate symbolic computation into your own applications and workflows. The Python API documentation and interactive examples give you a place to begin.
Meet the founder
Ben Ruijl
I founded Symbolica and lead Ruijl Research as its principal researcher. Previously, I was a postdoctoral researcher at ETH Zurich. I develop Symbolica for a living, with an open development approach supported by commercial licensing.
Symbolica is source available. Inspect the code, contribute improvements, and integrate the unmodified engine into your applications under the full license. Free and paid runtime plans support different uses.

Contributors
Symbolica has received major contributions from its users, especially through community packages from researchers building tensor and particle-physics tools on top of its computer algebra engine.
